About us

About Bloomlore

Bloomlore is an independent publication about what flowers mean. We cover individual flowers, color symbolism, cultural and religious traditions, birth flowers and gifting — for anyone choosing flowers for an occasion, planning a design or tattoo, or simply curious about where a meaning comes from.

Our approach is simple: say where a meaning comes from, say when it differs, and keep it separate from what is known about the plant itself.

Our purpose

One Flower, Many Meanings

Most flowers do not have a single fixed meaning. The same bloom can say different things depending on who is giving it, where, and when. We aim to make those differences visible rather than flatten them into one tidy answer.

  • CultureA flower used at weddings in one country may be reserved for funerals in another.
  • ColorRed, white and yellow varieties of the same flower often carry distinct messages.
  • HistoryVictorian flower dictionaries disagree with each other — and with modern lists.
  • OccasionContext shapes meaning: a lily at Easter reads differently from a lily at a memorial.
  • Personal contextFor many people, the strongest meaning is a personal memory. We respect that too.
How we work

Our Editorial Process

Every guide follows the same four stages. Our editorial policy describes each one in more detail.

Full editorial policy
  1. Research the flower

Identify the exact plant or plants a name refers to, and collect the meanings attached to it.

  2. Check botanical facts

Confirm names, family, native range and any safety information against authoritative sources.

  3. Research the context

Trace each meaning to its tradition, text or period, and note where sources disagree.

  4. Edit, review and update

Edit for clarity, review where relevant, publish with dates — and revisit when better information appears.

Our principles

What We Hold Ourselves To

  • AccuracyFactual claims are checked. If we cannot verify something, we say so or leave it out.
  • ClarityPlain answers first, then the detail. No padding, no mystification.
  • ContextEvery meaning is tied to the culture, period or source it comes from.
  • Source qualityWe favor botanical institutions, academic work, museums and primary texts over unsourced lists.
  • Cultural respectReligious and cultural symbols are described carefully and in their own terms.
  • CorrectionsMeaningful errors are corrected promptly and the article's update date changes.
  • TransparencyEach article shows who wrote it, who reviewed it where applicable, and when it was last updated.
